IYANDA TOOK A BITE of the sandwich Emiliano purchased. The juices of the pineapple and mustard covered chicken mingled and danced on her tongue.

They had stopped in front of Juanita’s Tasty Fare and Emiliano asked if she was hungry. Waiting in the car, she thought of sneaking away, fearful she would be seen by family friends or acquaintances, but her heart forced her to stay.

Thankfully she did or she would have missed the view of the afternoon sun hovering just above where the ocean and the sky met. As well as the delicious sandwich she was now savoring with a bottle of ginger beer to wash it down.

They had dropped Blessing off an hour earlier, wanting to finish the date alone. The day played over and over in her mind radiating warmth through her body. She quivered at the plan of providing the orphanage with their own small medicinal garden from the seeds.

They sat on the rocks of Yi Pada overlooking the black sanded beach, their silence overpowered by the laughter and the chatter of distant tourists and Igbalaian children. She was accustomed to Mason not saying much on the date unless it was about him. This was different. She was enjoying herself. For a moment guilt made the bread swell in her mouth, taking away the sweetness and spiciness of it.

“Do you love him?” Emiliano asked.

He was asking about Mason. Saying yes would forever lock her in an eternal lie. The opposite would give him permission to pursue creating complications.

The waves crashed on the shore, leaving their white foam on the sands.

Her family and community were the waves, demanding and beating her to submit under their power while she was the grain of sands.

“You don’t have to answer,” he said.

She closed her eyes. An army of wandering ants tickled her skin. She brushed them off, only to have their reinforcements take their place.

“My father used to say, ‘truth lies in a woman’s silence’.” A tiny smile appeared on his lips.

Iyanda’s eyes fixed on him, the smile fading. He flexed his jaw.

“He died,” Emiliano started, “eight years ago. Airplane accident. They claim it was engine failure. Sometimes, I wish it had been a conspiracy, like someone had planned it. Maybe then his death, his absence, wouldn’t still hurt.”

Iyanda laid her hand on his.

He placed a notepad and a pen on her lap. She raised a brow.

“Had it the whole time,” he said. “Thought you would be more comfortable with Blessing around. Plus, I wanted to be able to stare at your face, not your hands all day.”

She lowered her eyes with a coy smile crossing her lips.

Opening the notepad, she wrote, “Thank you.”

Then she wrote underneath it, “Mother?”

Emiliano frowned. “What about her?”

“I’m sure she misses your father as well.”

Emiliano scoffed. “I don’t really care if the woman had golden tears flowing from her eyes right now.”

Iyanda frowned. “How could you say that? She is your mother.”

“A snake is a better mother.” He took a swig of the cold ginger beverage.

“You must show her the respect and honor that is due her.
